The AP released their preseason top 25 yesterday, and they’re out of their minds. First off, let me give you the top 10 that was given to us.
- Ohio State
- Penn State
Number 1 is obviously Alabama, they were national champs and they should be at the top spot. Coming in at number 2 is the team that Alabama obliterated 24-6 in last years Sugar Bowl, the Clemson Tigers. With QB Kelly Bryant returning for his Senior season, many have the Tigers as big favorites to play in this year’s National Championship. Next up is the Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia had an incredible season, going 13-2 on the year behind Freshman QB and star of QB 1: Beyond the Lights Jake Fromm. Fromm was lights out all year, and was named co-newcomer of the year by the Associated Press, and I’m looking for him to have a HUGE year in the SEC East.
Now those have all made sense, but at 4, they have Wisconsin? This team ended last season with a win over Miami to finish 13-1. The problem here is that Ohio State, the only team to beat Wisconsin last season, is behind them. This is just nonsensical, OSU finished 2 spots ahead of the Badgers, and have now been jumped without even losing a game.
Washington at 6 might be the worst pick in the entire Top 25. Finishing last season with a loss to Penn State, this Huskies team was ranked 16th in the last AP Poll of the season. That means they jumped 10 SPOTS WITH A LOSS. They even jumped 4 spots over the team that beat them in their bowl game. Oklahoma at 7 is a solid decision, even after losing Baker Mayfield. Miami managed to jump 6 spots to number 8 after LOSING their last game of the year. Auburn also moved up 1 spot after losing to a team from the American Conference, a move that is both odd and unmerited. Penn State should be higher in my opinion. They beat Washington in the Fiesta Bowl, and only lost 2 games all year by a combined 4 points.
Overall, I think the majority of the Top 25 was done fairly well, but inside the top 10 there were spots that should be moved around, and even teams that should be out, such as Washington, Auburn, and Miami. More deserving teams and teams to watch include Michigan State, Notre Dame, and TCU, who I’m expecting to have a very good year.
