Kyrie Irving recently spoke to the media about a phone call that occurred between him and LeBron James. According to Irving, this call was an apology to James for the way he handled the infamous trade situation before the 2017-18 season. There was reportedly a change of heart for Irving after his recent struggles with leading the young Celtics in late game situations.
“I [felt] like the best person to call was him, because he’s been in this situation,” Irving said. “He’s been there with me. I’ve been the young guy, being a 22-year-old kid and I want everything. I want everything right now. Coming off an All-Star year, starting, and this heck of a presence is coming back [to Cleveland] and now I got to adjust my game to this guy.”
These quotes as well as the reconciliation of the two throughout this call lead many to believe that a reunion could be coming as soon as this year’s free-agency period. Another believer in this theory is former Cleveland teammate Kevin Love, who said that it is possible for Irving to make this move, and it could come as soon as the trade-deadline. Obviously, Kyrie is a free-agent at the end of this season, and if the Celtics are expecting that he may leave anyway then there is a solid chance that they try to pick up some assets or even a star player in return.
Adding Kyrie will make any decent team into a contender, and likely work even a bad team into a top 15-20 seed in the NBA. He is one of the best ball-handlers the NBA has ever seen, and has been able to consistently step up in big moments for Boston thus-far into the year. However this situation ends up, as a fan of the LeBron & Kyrie Cavs teams, just the thought of this reunion makes me reminisce on what a great run those two had. Any Lakers fan should be pushing for this as hard as possible as the team has been struggling without LeBron in the lineup, and likely need some changes to be made before they can contend with Golden State.
