Ohio State added to their already plentiful 2022 haul with Southlake Carroll Quarterback and ESPN 300’s number 1 overall prospect Quinn Ewers. Ewers initially committed to his home-state Texas Longhorns, but reportedly remained in contact with Ryan Day’s Buckeye coaching staff even after the August 14th decision. With that as a storyline it was no surprise the Buckeyes were heavy favorites to land the pro-style QB after his decommitment from Texas in late October.
With Ewers announcement, Day adds his 4th 5-star quarterback in 2 years at the helm, further reinforcing his goal of turning tOSU into “Quarterback U.” On the other end of things Texas’ in-state recruiting woes continue to build and Tom Herman’s seat seems to be getting hotter by the day. Ewers comes in as the 5th highest ranked QB prospect ever, and the Buckeyes’ 2nd highest commitment in program history.
Now with eight recruits in it’s 2022 class, Ohio State is up to 185.32 points, which would have been Top-50 in each of the last two cycles despite only containing roughly one-half to one-third of the university’s typical haul. The Buckeyes are continuing to reload rather than rebuilding, and rival fans are certainly taking notice of the unprecedented tear Day has been on since assuming duty in 2018.
It’s interesting to see the Peyton Manning comparison is brought up in that reaction as Manning is one of Ewers’ inspirations growing up. The pro-style Ewers displays, while a fair bit more athletic (sorry Peyton), is very similar to the future Hall-of-Famer. With a cannon for an arm and the benefit of Ryan Day’s quarterback friendly play calling, the sky is the limit for Ewers at Ohio State.
